Soooo beautiful. I love the examples about your little girl! Though I am not sure that autotelic people are "unable" to delay gratification for the right purpose.

The ability to delay gratification is a strength when it is done for something valuable. Merely depriving yourself of pleasure for no worthwhile future goal doesn't make sense.

I like to believe I am autotelic and I can delay gratification for the right purposes....It's not necessary that you have to exotelic to be able to delay gratification...

I am fully on board with the idea that you bring in more joy into your life when you are autotelic...

Thank you. When I said that autotelic folks are greedy and impatient, I don't mean they lack willpower per se.

I can take writing as an example for myself. Most hours spent writing is painful for me. It is a lot of bumbling around but in all that the joy of a good turn of phrase or a well-chosen metaphor is immense and immediate. The final piece may resonate or not with the audience, but it cannot take away the joy of that moment when something beautiful is created. I don't remember ever thinking about a piece that turns out poorly that I wasted my time working on it. Even the bad reps are fun is what I mean to say. Of course, it does sound dramatic when I say that autotelic people are unable to delay gratification.

Absolutely agree. I can relate so much to the joy of writing. It's an adventure, you just don't know what you will discover on the journey.
